The surrounding area of Dimitrovgrad is a hilly mountain terrain stretched out in the direction southwest – northeast. Relief landmarks are perpendicular to the direction in which the territory spreads. The territory is a part of the upper Nišava valley, which extends in the southeast direction with Zabrđe, Vidlič i Gornji Visok . Southwest of the Nišava valley, there is predominately hilly mountain terrain known as Burel, Derekul and Barje, bordered in the east by the Lukavica river valley, and in the west scarred by the Erma river gorge. In the east and southeast, Dimitrovgrad municipal area borders on Bulgarian territory, and in the north and northwest on the territory of Pirot and Babušnica municipalities. Overall, this area is a narrow and short, hilly mountain terrain, stretched out in the direction southwest – northeast, divided by a part of the Nišava valley. The town takes up the central part of the territory of 17.17 square kilometres.
Dimitrovgrad is one of the centres of the Bulgarian nationality in SCG. Two traffic routes of world importance – the international motorway (historical Roman road Via militaris) and railway Belgrade – Niš – Sofia . They enable road and railway traffic between Europe and Asia .
Gradina border-crossing is approximately 2 kilometres east from Dimitrovgrad. In the vicinity of the town there is a coalmine Zabrđe. In the southeast there is tourist and health resort Zvonačka spa with water temperature of 28 °C.
Climate
Climate elements of the area are determined by geographical position, latitude, height above sea level, relief formations, and distance from water resources and air currents are the basis for determining a climate zone. Based on the mentioned criteria, the territory of Dimitrovgrad municipality is climatically differentiated by microconditions in the range from temperate to mountain climate.
Relief diversity, ranging from the Nišava river bank that is 450 to 470 meters above sea level, to the mountain surrounding that is exceeding 1000 meters above sea level causes a huge difference in climatic phenomena, temperature and precipitation. According to the measurements effected at the hydrometeorological station in Dimitrovgrad the average temperature was:
